Wallpapering

Wall papering a wall is more expensive than painting a room, but it does give a more luxurious finish, with a greater impact in design terms. You do not have to wallpaper the whole room, if you have a wallpaper you like but it is very ornate, or very expensive designer wallpaper you may chose to only hang wallpaper on one wall and make it what we call a feature wall. This can look fantastic and adds a real focal point to a room, whether your choose a traditional design or a funky wallpaper that you have had specially printed for the purpose. You can also buy wallpaper murals, which look great in children’s bedrooms.

Coving

Cornice and covings are architectural mouldings that cover the joint between the ceiling and the walls. They range from highly decorative to plain and simple. The difference between Cornices and Coving are slight but distinct. Cornice is usually more highly decorated, is a flatter profile and is attached to the ceiling, whereas Coving is usually a plainer concave design, with a symmetrical profile so that it fits equally between the wall and the ceiling. Coving is usually attached to the wall, although if using coving adhesive it can be glued to the ceiling and the wall.

Artexing

Artex is actually a brand name. The product itself is an interior surface coating, which differs from plaster in that it is intended to be used with a textured effect. It dries slower than plaster, allowing more time to apply the texture.
Artex used to be made with asbestos to add strength, so if you have an old Artexed ceiling and are thinking of trying to remove it, get a professional to look at it first.

Artex can be bought as a ready-mixed paste, or as a powder. If you are just repairing a section, the ready-mixed paste is ideal, but if you are tackling a whole ceiling or ceilings you may prefer to buy a bag of powder as it will go further and be more cost effective. A 25kg bag of Artex Ceiling Finish will cover 25-40m2 depending on the texture finish.

Interior and exterior painting

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface (support base). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. A fresh coat of paint can really improve the interior and exterior of your property, brightening it up and making it look much tidier.

NOTE: Whichever option you choose it’s always a good idea to test on a small and inconspicuous area first to ensure that no permanent damage will be caused.
- Paint stripping options:
- Liquid, gel or paste strippers
- Mechanical strippers such as sanders

Woodwork repairs

Most damage is caused by aging of the timber or by damp conditions which lead to fungal infestation such as dry rot or insect attack from woodworm beetles or other boring insects, but it can also occur due to excessive bending or deflection or incorrect loading which can place stress on the timber and cause splitting or compression.Splits, cracks, and holes in wood are susceptible to insect attack as they open up a direct route into the centre of the timber.Leaks, damp conditions and condensation can lead to end decay or mid span timber decay. Once the fibres in the wood become saturated and swell they are a nice soft bed for fungal spores of wet rot and dry rot, for and wood-boring insect eggs.

Special paint effects and paint spraying

You can't just hook the sprayer up to the paint and start painting. Painting with a sprayer takes a little practice. Try perfecting your technique on cardboard. After you're sure you can provide nice even coverage, you can move on to painting the walls. Don't spray-paint when the air temperature is below 45 degrees or above 75 degrees. Don't spray-paint in direct sunlight, either. Too much heat dries the paint too fast, and it won't bond well. If it's too cold, the paint dries too slowly, attracting bugs and dirt, and the gun is more likely to clog.

UPVC soffit fascia & downpipe replacement

If you are fitting plastic Upvc guttering to your home then you need to get it right first time. Gutters that are fixed incorrectly typically overflow with water causing potential damp problems to fascia and soffit boards or wooden sils etc. This can happen all the time, only when it rains heavily, or only when the gutter is partially blocked with debris, either way it’s bad news and avoidable. The key to a successful installation is to ensure that the rainwater flows in the correct direction. No guttering should ever be installed “flat”. They must be fitted slightly higher at one end, this ensures that the water flows to the pipe where it can then discharge into the ground.
